A Commercial That Totally Misses the Mark
Submitted by LM on Mon, 07/18/2005 - 01:06.The strangest things bug me sometimes.
Yesterday, I saw a commercial for some Lysol wipes that went on and on about how many germs they killed. Then, it ended with something about how it's no wonder __moms__ everywhere use them.
I use a similar product and the appeal is less about how many germs are killed and more about the fact that I don't have to go to all the trouble of wetting a sponge. I just yank one of the wipes out of the container and go off to clean up my latest mess in the kitchen. ![]()
If they're going to play up to stereotypes, why not advertise the fact that __men__ would like such a product? Or, hey, why not just talk about how a lazy person of either gender could find such wipes convenient?
I have no idea where this came from.
Submitted by Dave on Sat, 07/16/2005 - 19:00.Sometimes, a dream is just too weird.
I had a false awakening where 6 ghosts entered my room. Each glowed a different color, and had a book that glowed the same color as the ghost, only more intensely. They surrounded me, setting their books down on various furniture, and were talking about the invisible ghost that hadn't arrived yet. When it did, the rest got excited, and I could feel its presence. I sensed it setting its invisible book on my nightstand, and then it moved over me. I could feel an intense prickly/tingly sensation wherever it touched me. It moved to my penis, where the feeling got really intense. That's when I really woke up, and tried waving it away.

The Senator Strikes Back
Submitted by Dave on Wed, 07/13/2005 - 04:25.I finally got a response from one of my senators after emailing them about the flag burning amendment. (See my previous rant)
Thank you for contacting me regarding Senate Joint Resolution 12. It is good to hear from you.
As you know, this resolution would prohibit the desecration of an American Flag. The Flag of the United States of America is a symbol of freedom. The Flag of the United States of America has been sanctified by the blood of thousands of U.S. soldiers who have fought across the world, and it must be protected from desecration. This proposed constitutional amendment would overturn the 1989 U.S. Supreme Court's 5-4 ruling which held that laws banning desecration of the U.S. flag were unconstitutional infringements on free speech and therefore a violation of the First Amendment.
And now, a haiku.

A Flag Burning Amendment? I sure hope not.
Submitted by Dave on Sun, 07/10/2005 - 04:58.Once again, a constitutional amendment for the protection of the US flag from descration Is before the US Congress. It has passed the House of Representatives and will soon be voted on by the Senate. I realize that patriotism may be something a lot of people lean on, but this amendment is a bigger threat to liberty than any protester with a flag and a match.
The burning of a flag may be a powerful political statement, but the right to make powerful political statements without fear of recourse is what makes our country what it is. As much as we have built up the flag as an icon, we’ve managed to develop quite an attachment to it. Even a couple overdramatized urban legends have surfaced over the years. (Example 1, Example 2) The thing that we have to remember, though, is that the while the flag is a symbol of some pretty high ideals, it is still just a symbol. Desecrating or destroying a symbol doesn’t take away what it represents.

The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency Series
Submitted by LM on Sat, 07/09/2005 - 20:41.![]() | The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency Box Set: "The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency" "Tears of the Giraffe asin: 0679789758 binding: Paperback list price: $38.85 USD amazon price: $25.64 USD |
The No 1. Ladies Detective Agency book series by Alexander Mccall Smith is a book series where very little happens. But it's a book series where very little happens that's set in Africa!
Though the series is typically found in the mystery section of book stores and libraries, the myseteries are very simple and rarely take center stage in the books and the detective agency is just a backdrop. What's important in the series is the people and their culture.
Alexander Mccall Smith does a wonderful job of bringing his characters to life while painting an accurate portrait of what life is like in Botswana. The main character is Precious Ramostwe whom everyone calls "Mma Ramostwe" even though it's not terribly formal form of address. She started her own detective agency using the money she got from selling her late father's cattle. She's a very perceptive and resourceful woman and a very likeable character. She's a dectective because she loves helping other people and she loves her country.

Animals in Translation

I gotta say it: Temple Grandin rocks.
If you're not familiar with her, she's a high functioning autistic who feels a strong connection with animals mainly due to the fact that her thinking is purely visual. She's greatly concerned with animal welfare and is perhaps best known for her humane slaughterhouse design which is used throughout the world.
I've often wanted to know more about her work for animals, but most of her writing on the subject is technical and written for fellow professionals. I'd read about the gist of her ideas but always wanted to get a first hand account of them...outside of that time I saw her speak and she signed one of my books. Yay!

First, I have to admit that I'm not a Trekkie. I'd watch an episode on occasion, but I never really got addicted to it. To that end, I haven't much thought of William Shatner as a compelling personality. I did get a few snickers out of his old Transformed Man album as a kid listening to Dr Dimento.
That is until last year when KGLT started playing tracks from Has Been. It was produced by Ben Folds, who is a definite favorite artist of mine, and his influence is apparent right off the bat on the first track, "Common People." Backing vocals were furnished with another personal musical hero, Joe Jackson
